Giclee Canvas Art Information

Giclee canvas art is a term used to describe a relatively new fine art printing process using wide format inkjet printers from Epson, Canon, Roland, and Hewlett-Packard. A french word meaning "spray", the word giclee is now commonplace in the fine art printing marketplace because of the extraordinary quality that can be produced. Hence the term giclee printing.

In the printmaking industry, other terms are used to describe this such as fine art giclee or giclee art reproduction. The reason this term is important is because there are several other printmaking methods, such as serigraphy and lithography, that deliver a completely different finished image through an entirely different production process.

Uniquely, giclee refers to a process where a fine art reproduction is done on an "on demand" basis. The artist therefore avoids extensive upfront costs as they normally would if printing serigraphy or lithography, which both have substantial set up fees and the requirement of running hundreds or thousands at a time. This is a crucial element because where serigraphy and lithography tend to be risky and require a substantial investmet, giclee fine art printing does not.
